The Monday Night Needlework Murder Guild eBook Kathleen Valentine

(Novella, 30k words – Crime/psychological) Over fifty years ago Miss Serena Pitts founded The Monday Night Needlework and Murder Guild in the town of Pitts Crossing, Massachusetts. Members got together every week to share cookies and gossip while they did their needlework and discussed the latest murder mysteries. But when an unscrupulous lothario starts seducing and fleecing some of its members, the guild begins falling apart. That is until retired teacher, Miss Cecelia McGill, decides this cannot go on. With a blend of small town charm, dark comedy, and psychological suspense, Kathleen Valentine has created a "whydunnit" featuring a heroine readers will find hard to forget.
The Monday Night Needlework Murder Guild eBook Kathleen Valentine
When I read the title - THE MONDAY NIGHT NEEDLEWORK AND MURDER GUILD - I knew I had to read this book. I expected it would be about a bunch of women who gather on Monday evenings to do needlework (they do) and solve murders (they don't.) Instead, the women read mysteries and discuss the books. But this is the story of one of the guild members who is a murderer herself. In the book's opening, Miss Cecelia McGill reveals that she has murdered someone, so the story is about how that surprising act came to be. The recently retired school teacher narrates the story of how she does what it takes to protect the guild members from a predatory male, out to separate them from their money. But why would she resort to murder? Is her motivation a combination of the effects of her past and the opportunity to remedy a bad situation?
Miss Cecelia is such a rich character. Although she has cultivated her image to be that of a stereotypical maiden-lady school teacher, her wild past would surprise her students. A child of the Sixties, she spent those years as a pot-smoking, sexually active woman, rebelling against her parents' beliefs. But one rowdy evening the party got out of hand, and the actions of one man changed her life.
Kathleen Valentine's humor is sprinkled throughout the story, adding just the right amount of spice to the personalities of Miss Cecelia and her friends. I like these women and wish I could meet them! If you read THE MONDAY NIGHT NEEDLEWORK AND MURDER GUILD, I'm sure you'll enjoy them as much as I did.

The Monday Night Needlework Murder Guild eBook Kathleen Valentine Reviews
OMG loved this book. Kathleen Valentine is there a sequel; I want to keep reading about this town and the ladies that reside within it. Interesting story line and great characters! Please make a sequel, I know you can do it!
I enjoyed this book by Kathleen Valentine, and not just because it revolved around a needlework club. (I really am a quilter!) It stars an interesting group of women; I'd love to read more stories about the residents of this small town! Nicely plotted and I liked the point of view chosen for the book!
I am going to look for more from this author. She really caught my attention in this book. From the first chapter you think you know what will happen, but you are on the edge of your seat wondering how it could possibly happen the way it is hinted to go. I was really taken by the story and the characters. You know these people. You have them in your life too. But you don't know if they will behave this way.
Not exactly a mystery, since we know who done it up front, but still a really good story. We can't really afford vigilante justice, but it's fun to read about. The two short stories that followed the novel were even better. And she really had me with the first reference to the Isles of Shoals, since I grew up in the town nearest them, have always admired Celia Thaxter, and know both Kittery and Newburyport well, since family lived there.
As usual, Kathleen Valentine's characters are well developed and thoroughly believable. This story moves along quickly as the individual characters are developed one chapter at a time. I love the concept of knowing what is going to happen at the very beginning of the story - but having to read the book to find out why and how. Cece and friends are not to be trifled with! This is a well written crime story with wonderful attention to the details that typically make Ms. Valentine's characters so real. Returning fans will love this book, and first time readers of her work will no doubt be looking for other "Valentines" to read when they finish this one.
Just finished this and I enjoyed every word. Maybe it's because I'm in a weekly needlework group myself, or maybe it's because I live on the North Shore of Massachusetts that Kathleen captures so well. And who among us hasn't fantasized about administering a little street justice ourselves?
The voices of the women in this book ring ring delightfully true as New Englanders of a certain age, especially Cecilia the narrator. I felt as if I could visit my local yarn shop and find her there, helping other women with questions about lace knitting..
Guess it's not a spoiler to say that there is, indeed, a murder in this book, but the choice of weapons surprised and amused me. Well done!
My first read by novelist Kathleen Valentine, this novella kept me hooked from the start. A group of women who do needlepoint and knitting gather every Monday night in an antique house north of Boston to do their crafts, gossip, and talk about murder novels. When crime of a certain kind enters their own circle, Cecelia and Gwen decide to put an end to it with a well-told crime of another kind.
The characters are delightful and the setting colorfully local. Smart women, knitting, North Shore color, and revenge. How can you go wrong? I happily passed part of my knee-replacement surgery recuperation with this wonderful tale.
