Smile When You're Lying Confessions of a Rogue Travel Writer Chuck Thompson 9780805082098 Books
I thoroughly enjoyed this romp of anecdotes through subjects related to travel and writing. It turns out Chuck and I have commonalities; we've seen the same bands in Oregon, we're familiar with MHCC, friends who were alums in the JET program, we both love to travel, etc. I found myself agreeing with him most of the time, and now I'm interested in approaching my travel (and writing about it) the same way he does his. I finished this in four days, and the next one in two. Chuck is funny, insightful and an excellent read. I only wish I'd have even seen Travelocity on a newsstand, in order to distinguish it from the site where I can search some airlines and find out I couldn't afford them, much less been told it was approaching travel writing differently. I might have bought a copy.

Smile When You're Lying Confessions of a Rogue Travel Writer Chuck Thompson 9780805082098 Books Reviews
I enjoyed reading Chuck Thompson's perspective on travel writing and the true motives behind why writers write such endlessly optimistic copy. In addition, I found his personal stories of travel misadventures to be particularly entertaining.
While I was wheeling around my wagon under the wan and pallid, flickering fluorescents of sweet infamy, I was momentarily startled that the book-cover color was "yellow," like a detail from a Norman Rockwell painting.
Anyway, anyone who can get away with describing a Thai partygirl's breasts as resembling "Hershey's chocolate kisses," deserves to be stood a beer on the polished mahogany bench.
I like the fact that Mr. Chuck Thompson--who tells us that the only reason Travelocity, during its feud with rival Expedia, sold any magazines at all, was, that some deranged corporate exec insisted that every cover wantonly display the half-nude equivalent of a Playboy model, not necessarily in a travel-related environment--succeeded in his overt attempt to write a bestseller. I hope I get the same treatment, when my travel book "Fluid Borders" comes out eventually in the near or far future.
If I undervalued Chuck's friendship in the past, I don't exactly know what to say. I'd have to check my copies of Escape magazine, but I believe we might have shared the same glossy printed page once or twice for, uh, a short book review, much like this one.
Chuck Thompson is clearly the Quentin Tarantino of the exclusive travel writer's circle of distinguished journeymen scribbleruses. He might have even gone to riding camp when he was younger, and applied to Mt. Holyoke for a "real" college education. He seems like good people.
I liked it so much I'm going to buy exactly one more copy to give to a total stranger in public.
I like the way author writes - he is witty and informative. This is the second copy I've purchased, so that it can be lent out.
Chuck Thompson is a really entertaining writer. Highly recommended.
Thompson provides an intelligent, funny and at times (i thought) cynical account of his travels abroad. I found myself laughing out loud and then cupping my chin in contemplation, all while reading the same page! If you like to travel and you like to read then I recommend you get your hands on this cleverly written book!
Witty, funny, sarcastic, cynical, and dead on!
funny, informative and revealing. chuck thompson has the experiences we all need, but now we can share them without the risk.
