Death Carries a Camcorder Essays on fantasy writing Tom Simon Books

I loved this book! It really got me thinking.

What a great analysis of today's traditional publishing fantasy genre!

Tom Simon skewers many deserving targets like George R.R. Martin, George Lucas, and even some people not named George!

He shows equal opportunity dissection skills as he both lauds Ursula K. Le Guin at some points and deconstructs some of her other arguments elsewhere.

The great thing about Simon is that not only does he make cogent points intellectually, he does it with style and panache. You're not just educated and enlightened by the essays, you're also very, very entertained!

Death Carries a Camcorder Essays on fantasy writing Tom Simon Books Reviews

I enjoyed this series of essays thoroughly. Mr. Simon obviously loves the genre of fantasy, but he sees it with clear eyes, and is not above skewering some of the sillier aspects of the field - as in 'Gwladys and the Ghraem'lan', which pokes fun at the apparently insatiable urge that fantasy authors have to inflict unpronounceable or otherwise inappropriate names on their characters. 'Sock Puppet, Son of Sock Puppet' is a good reminder to writers to avoid the sin of creating characters solely to parrot one's favorite views. And 'Why Are Dragons Afraid of Americans?' was not only a delightful exercise in windmill-tilting, as the author himself acknowledges, but also uproariously funny (to me, and to my mother, who had been in a particularly black mood that day). So yes, this collection is definitely worth reading and rereading.
Simon's essays are insightful, well-written, clear, and convincing.
Great fun, and much easier to find a given article in a printed book than to have to go plowing through the blog for a specific post.
Mr. Simon is an excellent writer, and his subject - writing fantasy that makes sense - is a good one. There is so much hackneyed fantasy out there, that it was a joy to hear his views about Tolkien - and his comparisons to others who aren't as good.

His analysis of what worked - and what decidedly didn't - in the Star Wars movies is worth the price all by itself, and there is a lot more to read.

Throughout, the author's knowledge, and gentle use of that knowledge, made it easy to read how he would have made things better. I knew I didn't like many of the things I've seen or read - I didn't know why. Now I have a better understanding.
